One London police officer suspended after video goes viral of him kneeling on Black man’s neck during arrest

Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon, and has been seen by a doctor.

London: One London police officer was suspended and another given restricted duties Friday after a video of an arrest appeared to show an officer kneeling on a Black man’s neck.

Footage of the arrest in north London on Thursday shows two officers holding down the handcuffed man. At the beginning of the 2 minute and 20 second clip, one of the officers appears to be applying pressure to the man’s neck with his knee. The officer’s hand is on the head of the man, who is on pavement laying on his side.

“Get off me … get off my neck,“ the struggling man can be heard shouting in the video that appeared on social media. “I haven’t done anything wrong, get off my neck.”

One of the two officers asks, “Are you going to behave yourself?” He is told to stay down.

The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which oversees complaints involving the police forces in England and Wales.

““The video footage that I have seen today and is circulating on social media is extremely disturbing,’’ Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Steve House said. “I understand that many viewing the footage will share my concern.”

The police department said in a statement that the two officers were responding to a report of a fight. The statement said the man was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon, and has been seen by a police doctor.

“Some of the techniques used cause me great concern,’’ House said. “They are not taught in police training.″

London Mayor Sadiq Khan raised questions about what happened with senior officers.

“I welcome the fact the incident has been reviewed quickly by the Met and it’s right that they have referred it to the IOPC,” Khan said. “I look forward to a swift and thorough independent investigation, with all decisions made public.

Police in many cities are under increased scrutiny following the death of George Floyd following his arrest in Minnesota on 25 May. A police officer who held his knee against Floyd’s neck for nearly eight minutes, Derek Chauvin, was charged with second-degree murder.

The remarks came after Han requested such cooperation, considering fake news surrounding COVID-19 and a recent high-profile digital sexual abuse case in South Korea, in which such illegal materials were distributed across social media platforms. The regulator has kept a close watch over the tech giant this year.

In a blog post, Pichai said that since January, Google has blocked hundreds of thousands of ads attempting to capitalize on the coronavirus pandemic.

The Buckingham Palace has decided to sell its own brand of botanical dry gin. “The spirit is infused with citrus and herbal notes derived from 12 botanicals, several of which are from Buckingham Palace garden, including lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, bay leaves and mulberry leaves,” said Royal Collection Trust in a release. The trust is a department of the British Royal Household.

The premium small-batch London dry gin will be available at Royal Collection Trust’s shops.

According to FoxBusiness, the new alcoholic beverage is made with an alcohol by volume content of 42 percent. The decorated bottle will cost £40 or around $50 for 700ml.

Those who want to buy the Buckingham Palace Gin can pre-order it online here. The delivery for now is only for the United Kingdom. It will be officially dispatched on 31 August and also served at official events at the Palace. The website has also mentioned that the gin is only available for customers over the age of 18.

The profits from the sale of every bottle will go to Royal Collection Trust, FoxBusiness reported. The trust helps to fund the upkeep and conservation of the Royal Collection’s exhibitions, publications, loans and educational programmes.

People reported that this is not the first time that the Royals are selling their tipple. Prince Charles already produces organic gin on his Highgrove Estate in Cornwall, while the Queen’s Balmoral Estate in Scotland also distills its own single malt whiskey.

The report adds that the gin is also meant to be a financial lifeline considering the Royal Collection Trsut lost millions of dollars in funding since the COVID-19 pandemic forced Buckingham Palace and other royal homes to shut their doors to tourists.

As per Independent Online, the Queen’s former chef Darren McGrady disclosed which drinks she enjoys. “She likes a gin and Dubonnet. That’s her favourite drink,” the report quoted McGrady as saying.

Fortnite honors Renegade creator Jalaiah Harmon with her own in-game emote

Fortnite’s newest in-game emote is a collaborative one. Epic Games this evening announced the launch of “The Renegade,” the viral TikTok dance created by Atlanta teenager Jalaiah Harmon. The Twitter account for Fortnite openly cites Harmon, writing, “Go, go, go, go, let’s go and bust out some [fire] moves by @jalaiah.”

It’s not clear whether Epic and Harmon struck some type of licensing deal, but it’s a possibility considering the developer’s rocky legal history with dance emotes. Throughout Fortnite’s meteoric rise starting in the fall of 2017, the game has featured a number of real-world dances copied from pop culture. Sometimes the emotes were inspired by dances on old television shows, like the default dance inspired by Scrubs actor Donald Faison. But quite often these dances were invented by black creators and later went viral on social media.

A number of lawsuits were filed against Epic over claims the company infringed on some variety of either likeness or copyright by using the dances without permission, and some remain ongoing. Regardless, in this case, it appears Epic is openly citing the creator of the dance its newest emote emulates, and it would be quite strange to do so without having first collaborated with Harmon to get it in the game.

It appears Epic is no longer interested in taking existing dances and turning them into emotes without credit, as was its strategy in the past for some popular dances. The company held a TikTok dance contest earlier this year with transparent licensing terms and has been turning popular streamer dance moves into emotes with the permission and collaboration of the creators themselves. Popular streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins got his own skin, emote, and other in-game items as part of a deal with Epic back in January.

The inclusion of the Renegade emote is also a nice gesture for Harmon, who largely went unrecognized for her dance even as it became one of the most popular moves on TikTok and other social platforms earlier this year. Only after articles by publications like The New York Times and Vox did Harmon get the proper credit for her massively influential contribution to pop culture. And now Harmon will be forever immortalized in the world of Fortnite.

India-EU summit: Narendra Modi says partnership important for ‘economic restoration’ post COVID-19

Addressing the 15th India-EU summit, Modi said there is a need for more cooperation among democratic nations to deal with economic problems.

Stating that India and the European Union are “natural partners”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that the India-EU partnership can play an important role in “economic reconstruction” as new problems have emerged globally after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the 15th India-EU summit, he said there is a need for more cooperation among democratic nations to deal with economic problems.

“After COVID-19, new economic problems emerged globally. For this, we feel the need for more cooperation among democratic nations. Today, both the health and prosperity of our citizens are facing challenges. There are different types of pressures on the rules-based international order. Thus, the India-EU partnership can play an important role in economic reconstruction, and in building human-centric globalisation,” he said.

Apart from the current challenges, Modi said that long-term challenges like climate change are also a priority for both India and the EU.

“In our efforts to increase the use of renewable energy in India, we invite investment and technology from Europe. I hope that through this virtual summit, our relations will gain momentum,” he said.

Terming India and the European Union “natural partners,” Modi called for creating an action-oriented agenda to foster the partnership and said he is committed to making relations “deep and comprehensive”.

“Due to COVID-19, we had to postpone India-EU summit. It is good that we are able to come together today through a virtual medium. Like you, I am also committed to making our relations deep and comprehensive,” the prime minister said.

“For this, we must adopt a long-term strategic perspective. Along with this, an action-oriented agenda should be created, which can be implemented within the stipulated time frame. India and the EU are natural partners. Our partnership is also useful for peace and stability in the world. This reality has become even more evident in today’s global situation,” he added.

Modi also said that India and EU both share universal values like democracy, pluralism, inclusivity, respect for international institutions, multilateralism, freedom and transparency.

The EU is represented at the summit by European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The summit was scheduled to happen earlier this year but was postponed due to coronavirus pandemic and is being held virtually.

The topics of trade and investments were likely to be on the agenda for Wednesday’s summit, reports said.

Further, The Indian Express reported, “The two sides will also announce a new maritime security dialogue, since the EU has been quite active in the Indian Ocean region and had displayed considerable amount of skill and capacity while combating piracy in the western Indian Ocean region. Sources said the two sides will decide to push for stronger defence and security cooperation, and one of them will be to launch negotiations for a pact between CBI and Europol.”
